How Crochet Found Me

I’m Emma Thornton, and my journey with yarn began in my grandmother’s sitting room in Somerset, where the rhythmic click of her crochet hook became the soundtrack to countless childhood afternoons. She taught me my first chain stitch when I was seven, and though my early attempts produced wonky squares barely recognisable as dishcloths, I was utterly captivated. What started as a way to spend time with her evolved into a lifelong passion that has shaped both my career and my daily life. For over fifteen years now, I’ve been creating, teaching, and sharing crochet and quilting patterns with makers around the world through Crafts Crochet.

Building Skills Through Practice and Community

My formal education took me through textile design at college, but honestly, the most valuable lessons came from hours spent experimenting with different fibres, techniques, and colour combinations in my small studio flat. I’ve worked with everything from delicate cotton thread for intricate doilies to chunky wool for cosy winter blankets. Along the way, I discovered that quilting complemented my crochet work beautifully—both crafts require patience, precision, and a love for transforming simple materials into something meaningful. I’ve attended workshops across the UK, from London to Edinburgh, always eager to learn regional techniques and connect with fellow makers who share this wonderful obsession.

Why I Create Free Patterns

When I launched Crafts Crochet, my mission was simple: make beautiful, well-written patterns accessible to everyone, regardless of budget. I remember being a student, desperately wanting to try new projects but unable to afford pattern books. That frustration stayed with me. Every pattern I publish is tested multiple times, photographed in natural light, and written with clear instructions that beginners can follow whilst still offering enough interest for experienced crocheters. I believe that creativity shouldn’t be locked behind paywalls, and that sharing knowledge strengthens our entire crafting community. The emails I receive from makers who’ve completed their first blanket or finally mastered that tricky stitch make every late night writing patterns absolutely worthwhile.

My Approach to Teaching

I write patterns the way I wish they’d been written for me when I was learning—with detailed stitch counts, progress photos at crucial points, and troubleshooting tips for common mistakes. Before publishing anything on Crafts Crochet, I test each pattern myself, then have at least two other makers work through it to catch any unclear instructions. My tutorials focus on building genuine skill rather than just completing a single project. I want you to understand why we increase stitches at certain points, how tension affects finished size, and what adjustments you can make to personalise each design. My studio is always filled with work-in-progress samples at various stages, because I truly believe in practising what I teach.
